Cob in the Business

Rebecca Zabel
This “Elf on the Shelf” meets “Shop Local” campaign engages the community on a scavenger hunt to find “Poppy” in local businesses.
The Cob in the Business program was created as a way for the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce to better utilize our social media tools and grow our social media connections and reach while also encouraging community members to visit their local stores during the Christmas shopping season. Because Mitchell is the Corn Palace City, we chose to have a corn cob mascot for the program that would visit 10 businesses between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We prepared for the program by having professional pictures taken of Poppy within each sponsoring business which we were then able to post on our social media sites throughout the day as clues to which business Poppy was visiting that day. 10 member businesses were asked to be a sponsor of the program by giving $25 towards a grand prize of “Mitchell Money” as well as a $25 gift certificate to their store for a drawing from individuals that visited their store when Poppy was there.
