Buy Local - Eat, Shop, Play, Stay

Linda Lawrence
Buy Local programs encourage consumers to “eat, shop, play, and stay” by offering discount coupons and events focused on Chamber members.
Chamber members are given the option of enrolling in the “Buy Local” program at a one-time cost of $25. As a participant in the program, the member can take part twice annually in the “Buy Local Weekend” and annually in the “Buy Local Extravaganza.” Due to popularity, enrollment for these county-wide events are on a first-come, first-served basis. The Union County Community Center provides space and resources for the Extravaganza. The Chamber promotes this event through local signs, emails, newsletters, newspaper, and businesses. A total of 55 Chamber businesses set up and promote their products which may include food, retail, and/or services. In 2015, 500+ visitors came to the 2-hour event to see a wide variety of Chamber businesses and services available in our community. The Buy Local Weekend is held in the spring and fall. Thirty-plus businesses provide a discount of either “buy one, get one free” or “50% off” of merchandise, food, or services. A two-sided coupon sheet is created and distributed through newsletters, email, city and county offices, with advertising through the local newspaper. During the two three-day events, that take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, signs are placed throughout the community and at participating businesses, while consumers visit any and all locations for these highly publicized specials. Sponsorship for all events is obtained in order to offset any costs and provide additional exposure for the sponsoring businesses.
