Highlighting career opportunities in manufacturing to area students thru an interactive exhibit and expo.
The cornerstone of our economy, manufacturing is growing and creating jobs right here in the Elgin area. The manufacturing sector offers rewarding professions for those individuals possessing suitable skills and credentials but misperceptions about jobs in manufacturing have driven many young people away. The 2014 Manufacture Your Future fair was an interactive exhibit that brought together leading manufacturers in the Elgin area to not only showcase their products and processes to the public but primarily to highlight career opportunities in advanced manufacturing to area students. Coordinated by the Elgin Development Group, a public-private partnership between the City of Elgin, the Elgin Area Chamber and the Downtown Neighborhood Association, the week-long event saw nearly 20,000 visitors, including students from School District U-46 and Burlington 301 schools, visit the exhibit and exhibitors at the Gail Borden Public Library between September 27-October 5, 2014. This event afforded local manufacturing firms and professionals the chance to demonstrate to these young people what modern manufacturing is really like and the wealth of career opportunities that await them. Participating local manufacturing firms included Acme Design; Bison Gear and Engineering; Bystronic Inc.; Custom Aluminum; Elgin Sweeper; Fabric Images; Hoffer Plastics; Norlux; Otto Engineering; Plasmatreat; Winergy; and Wittenstein.
